The series also includes embroidered tapestry paintings, beak-spouted vessels, and zoomorphic pottery in the tradition of Gilan, the Iranian province where Ghazal’s maternal ancestors lived. “I learned the same lessons and faced the same design challenges potters did thousands of years ago in making these pots,” she says, explaining her deep connection to the craft. “In this way, there is a memory that lives in the form and the materials.”

Fish With A Sea - solo Exhibit
December 2022
Ahead of my solo exhibit “Fish Without A Sea” at Mainsite Contemporary, the Norman Arts Council published an article, “Iran-born artist brings exploration of Persian, Islamic visual traditions to MAINSITE.” The exhibit included 8 large-scale embroidered oil paintings, 29 ceramic pots and sculptures, an installation of 31 ceramic plates, and a single-channel video. The exhibit was made possible by grants from the Puffin Foundation, the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, and the Norman Arts Council. It was also a Finalist in Visual Art for the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund.

As a Library of Congress Junior Fellow, I used ArcGIS software to create a storymap on transregional artistic cultural production from the Persianate world. My project highlights the intersections of poetry, calligraphy, and miniature painting as vessels for the centuries-long multifaceted exploration of passionate love (‘ishq), in both its earthly and sacred manifestations, highlighting archives from the Library’s Persian Language Rare Materials collection housed at the African and Middle Eastern Division (AMED).
